Non Threatening Boys*: An Ode to George Michael on His 63rd Birthday

This past Christmas, I came across an extract from James Gavin’s 2022 biography of George Michael.

It spoke of quiet acts of kindness and generosity from the late pop star: an anonymous grant to a couple seeking fertility treatment, a £5,000 tip to a bartender struggling with student debt, regular visits to homeless shelters.

I had always considered myself a George Michael fan, but this small insight into who he was as a person – how he used celebrity for good – all while creating some of the best pop music of all time, seemingly opened a floodgate. I quickly found myself deep in a YouTube rabbit hole, bingeing all things George Michael – so today, the day after what would have been his 63rd birthday, I thought I’d explain exactly why I love him so much.
