Melli Monaco on The Pineapple Show, Music and Afrobeats

Melli Monaco is a singer, songwriter and online personality. You may know her from her hit YouTube dating show The Pineapple Show where she puts power in the hands of women on first dates. We spoke to Melli about her latest single 'Marche', The Pineapple Show and afrobeats.

First and foremost we wanna do a bit of a wellness check, how are you Melli?

I’m amazing! Thank you for asking.

You’ve lived in Paris, Atlanta and Los Angeles - which place has impacted your music most and why?

That’s a tough question because I started doing music when I was in LA, but I love ATL’s music scene and I grew up in Paris, so I grew up listening to French music mostly. I would say America in general because that’s where most of my adult experiences have happened and that’s where I pull from.

Which music scene do you prefer?

Atlanta definitely. Atlanta is so much fun.

Whose music inspires you the most?

I love afrobeats, reggae, hip hip, pop - I’m all over! So it goes from Popcaan, Vibz Kartel, Rihanna, Drake, Jorja Smith… The list goes on.

Who is your dream person to collaborate with?

Rihanna.

What inspired you to create The Pineapple Show?

On my Youtube channel, I talk about relationships and I try to help men by giving them advice on their dating game! So I just thought, why not help facilitate the process and find a girl they can actually talk to live.

The premise of your show is that ‘women make the rules and can reject potential suitors by saying ‘Pineapple’.’ Your show gives women a lot of power on dates, which I think is amazing. Was this your intent?

It is funny that you say that because a lot of men actually complain about that aspect of the show - women having the power! It wasn’t my initial intent, I just wanted to give people the opportunity to meet and talk! The word “pineapple” really came as a safe word for the women in case they felt uncomfortable, but it ended up taking on a whole other meaning!

What do you want to accomplish with your art and work?

The goal for my music is very simple. I hope that when people hear my music, they feel something. I want to uplift people and I want people to be able to relate and feel inspired to accomplish whatever they want.
