Non Threatening Boys*: Marc Maron and the Charisma of a Curmudgeon
Words: Melanie Robinson
Make it stand out
Daddies are in – that is, politically progressive, emotionally aware, non-threatening daddies. A daddy needn’t be a man, of course, but when it comes to men, finding one over 50 without a problematic past is a Sisyphean undertaking. Among comic the pickings are even slimmer. Recently, while contemplating my lust for a certain podcasting, stand-up zaddy of the curmudgeon variety, I wondered about this cultural phenomenon. What caused the collective thirst, and what was the allure of this neurotic silver fox in particular?
It stands to reason that modern democratic backsliding and a rise in fascistic thinking would naturally send the more sensitive of us running into the arms of a capable, caring daddy. While some may spring for the solace of a gentle dom, I need a firm hand – the sort of safety that only a cantankerous comedian with good politics and a stubborn disposition can provide. I want Marc Maron to talk vehemently at me.
