John Early on his Favourite Madonna Album, Actors and Irish Crafts

For this year’s Non Threatening Boys* mini zine, the incredible John Early took to the cover in support of his directorial debut, Maddie’s Secret.

Though his in-zine interview with the queen of the after-school movie Kellie Martin was pretty in depth, we got involved for a Members Only chat about his faves right now: the album he is rediscovering, his favourite actors, and the niche educational programming he’s been obsessed with for years now…

What are you listening to right now?

Well you know the kids kind of rediscovered Erotica, the Madonna album, and it thrilled me so much that they dug up the “Thief of Hearts.” I was so touched by that. So I am chasing youth, following their lead and getting back into Erotica - back is a key word because I love Madonna so much.

What is your current internet rabbit hole?

One I’ve had for the past several years - my ex-boyfriend, who was the production designer of Maddie’s Secret, Gordon Landenberger, he introduced me to this old Irish kind of public television craft series? It’s called Hands and each episode focuses on a different Irish craft like carpet weaving or boat making. You should be binge watching Hands.

Who is on your acting Mount Rushmore?

Oh my god well, Wallace Shawn, Lisa Kudrow, Laura Dern, Sandy Dennis, Barbara Stanwyk, Toni Collette, Jennifer Saunders, Kirsten Johnston. I think there are only four in Mount Rushmore so I’ve probably gone over.
