Jack Haven spent the majority of Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma without a face or a voice. As Little Death, the masked killer at the centre of Jane Schoenbrun’s new horror film, they communicate almost entirely through movement. Preparing for the role meant watching “any slasher movie that I could see” - Halloween, Friday the 13th, Black Christmas, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - before experimenting with Little Death’s physicality and sending footage to Schoenbrun. “I was making videos of myself walking back and forth in a park and having friends film me and then just watching them back and sending them to Jane and being like, which one is scariest?”

Camp Miasma is Haven’s second collaboration with Schoenbrun, following I Saw the TV Glow, and their creative relationship has become increasingly collaborative. “I think that Jane just gave me a chance,” Haven says, over Zoom, from LA ahead of the Camp Miasma premiere. “I believed in my ability to channel this very strange, very specific emotional state of the character in I Saw the TV Glow. And then with Miasma, I think they wanted to scramble all that, and let my monster come out.”
